SATURDAY, APRIL 16 – Geology of the Morrisville Triassic Alluvial Fan and Graphite outcrop
(RAIN DATE, SATURDAY, APRIL 23)
Meeting Time: 10:00 am
Meeting Place: To Be Announced, once you register for the trip, we will send you directions to our meeting place.
Hi everyone!!
Thanks so much for your participation in our field trips. We have had a very positive experience with the group and look forward to leading more trips!
We've had a few challenges over the past two months. Our contact at Wake Stone quarry has told us to reconsider the field trip for a future date. Unfortunately the March trip did not happen either as Rob canceled due to a poor weather forecast. The hike is on a mostly rocky trail along the river and safety was a concern. Rob also transferred to a new school mid year, however, he has settled in and is looking forward to leading a future trip to the section of the Haw River where his school resides.
You are invited to participate in a geology field trip to outstanding sites in and around Wake County, particularly in the Falls Lake area. For the April trip, we will visit three outstanding sites in the Raleigh area.
The date for this Geotrek is Saturday April 16th with a rain date the following weekend. I will co-lead this field trip with my friend, Mary Watson, a geologist and geology instructor at several local community colleges.
We will visit the site of an alluvial fan that developed during the rifting of Pangaea during the Triassic period followed by a neat outcrop of graphite schist in north Raleigh. This unique and special rock represents the earliest traces of life in North Carolina. We will be able to collect specimens at both these outcrops.
.
Then up to the Falls Lake area where we'll have our lunch by the dam at Falls Lake. If time allows, we can also visit an outcrop of garnet-mica schist and collect there. Bring a lunch to enjoy! For those interested, there are very nice hiking opportunities by the dam at Falls Lake and Rob can lead a hike for those wanting to burn off some steam.
The cost of the Geology Field Trip is $35.00 per student. There is no charge to parents/drivers. Contact Rob at rgreengeology@gmail.com if you would like details about a multiple sibling or scout group discount.
Please let us know as soon as you can, if you will be attending and how many will be in your party***
If you are interested in this trip, please register in advance. To register, or if you'd like more information, please contact rgreengeology@gmail. com. Two forms of payment are accepted: PayPal or check.
When you register, please email Rob with the total number in your group, including number and ages of students. If you are not using PayPal, ask for information on paying with a check. Send your email with APRIL GEOLOGY TRIP in the subject line. Rob's email is rgreengeology@gmail.com
***We are very sorry but, we can no longer accommodate or accept participants on a 'drop-in basis' for the geology trips. If you would like to join us, please register in advance, so that we can know how many to expect. This helps us offer the best-possible experience for everyone. We hope you will understand that this precaution is for everyone's well being and safety!!
